Patient during PRP therapy at Dr Saber clinic

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) is a treatment that involves extracting plasma from the patient’s own blood. This plasma contains a high level of nutrient-rich platelets and when injected into a specific area, these platelets have a rejuvenating and healing effect.

In the body, platelets help clot the blood and release and synthesis growth factors. This means that when the skin is injured, proteins and platelets are released to stop any bleeding and kickstart the healing process.

It’s because the plasma in our blood has such a high concentration of platelets that it is so beneficial when used in cosmetic treatments, whether it’s a standalone or combination treatment.

Whether or not your specific concerns can be addressed using PRP injections will need to be discussed with Dr Saber Ansari during a personalised consultation. Your general health, as well as the severity of your concerns, will need to be taken into account.

PRP can be used to treat a number of different concerns, including:

Lines and wrinkles around the eye

As the skin around the eyes changes with age, lines and wrinkles become more prominent. PRP injections can be used to stimulate collagen production, which will help smooth out the skin around the eyes.

Acne scars

PRP injections can be used to remodel the collagen in scars, making them less noticeable.

Sunken cheeks

It’s normal for the cheeks to sag once the skin loses volume with age. PRP injections can be used to boost the cheeks by giving them a healthier and fuller appearance.

Hand age spots & wrinkles

By boosting the skin cells in the hands, PRP injections can reduce the appearance of age spots and rejuvenate the skin on the hands, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Hair loss

PRP injections can also be used to stimulate the hair follicles, which can help address hair loss as well as thinning hair.

How PRP Treatments are Performed

The first stage of the PRP process requires the extraction of a small sample of blood. This is done in the same way as a normal blood test, however, the amount of blood that is extracted will depend on the area being treated.

Once the patient’s blood has been extracted, the PRP will need to be separated from the red blood cells. This is done by placing the blood vials in a centrifuge, which brings the PRP to the top of the vial. Thereafter the PRP is extracted from the vial using a syringe.

From there, the PRP will be injected into the relevant area and patients are free to return to their normal routines directly afterwards. Since no incisions are necessary, no downtime is required. With this being said, some patients choose to take a day off work after their session.

In most instances, several sessions will be required to achieve the desired outcome, with each session taking about half an hour to complete. Dr Saber will give you an idea of how many sessions will be required during your consultation.

PRP is also commonly paired with a number of other cosmetic treatments because it can enhance results and accelerate healing. You can discuss the possibility of adding PRP injections to your treatment plan with Dr Saber.

Most patients can expect to see results a week or two after treatment. However, if multiple treatments are required, more patience will be needed before the desired outcome can be achieved. The results that are seen will depend on the patient’s goals. Some of what can be expected includes improved skin tone and elasticity, smoother skin, a reduction in scarring and a healthy glow.

If PRP was used for hair loss, patients may experience an increase in hair growth as well as thicker, healthier strands.

There may be some slight swelling, redness and tenderness in the area(s) that was treated. However, this will subside within a day or two. Patients are free to apply mineral makeup to the treated area should they wish to eliminate any redness after their appointment.

Any medications and supplements that could thin your blood should be avoided as this could make any bruising worse. Caffeine and alcohol should also be avoided for a day or two. Strenuous exercise is also discouraged for 24 hours to give the treated area time to recover.

Because PRP treatments are administered using the patient’s own blood, allergic reactions are not a concern. In fact, there are little to no side effects associated with this treatment besides the potential bruising, swelling and redness. Infection is the only risk to be aware of but if the necessary aftercare instructions are followed, this won’t be a concern.
